When I was a long haired teenager I loved heavy rock and was a guitarist in a heavy metal band in the day. The band I really loved was Rush and they are still my favourite band with Alex Lifeson as my favourite guitarist. Their worldwide break came in the form of an LP called 2112, an iconic album which still has immense value amongst rock fans.
It is a concept album and tells the story of a man in the future at a time when all forms of creativity have been banned by the Priests of the Temples of Syrinx. Our hero finds a guitar in a cave and is awed by the beautiful sounds he can make from it. Seeing it as a gift of beauty for mankind he takes it to the Priests who destroy it and tighten their grip on the masses to keep them in their place!
The band acknowledged the writing of Russian/American author and political activist Ayn Rand as their inspiration for this story.
It is an album I have loved since it’s release and my wife and children also now love it, so why this story?
My daughter shares the same love of rock as I do and also is an individual, as I have been since those heady days! What we started to notice was that every time we looked at a clock at night the time always seemed to be ………………21.12!
In fact it got so often we would have a celebratory Bill & Ted moment every time we saw it! I was driving along a road I have travelled many many years and on a prominent stone on a corner in the middle of nowhere somebody had written quite clearly “2112“.
All this started happening more often as we travelled towards the Cosmic moment of 2012, but surely we are 100 years out for this to be significant?!
I put my spiritual thinking cap on!
The Cosmic moment was at the Winter solstice 21st December. In the UK we write that as 21/12.
The opening lyric from the album is “And the meek shall inherit the earth”
Other lyrics include :
“I can’t wait to share this new wonder, The people will all see it’s light”
“There’s something here as strong as life, I know that it will reach you”
“I see the hand of man arise, With hungry mind and open eyes”
So the more I travel on this crazy spiritual path , the more the album 2112 seems to travel with me!
I know angels leave numbers repeatedly for people to see as a coded message to the people who see them but I have never found a meaning for 2112. I know there are ways to group numbers together but I am not clever enough to do it so here is the question:
Is there a spiritual meaning behind the number 2112 and what does it mean?
Any ideas are welcome. If Alex, Geddy or Neil would like to explain the spiritual meaning behind this album then feel free to come round for a cup of tea sometime!!
Until then I will leave you with a quote from, perhaps , the greatest philosophers of the rock world
“Be excellent to each other, and party on dudes!”
